Paris: Discovering Balance at Lafayette Anticipations
(December 2024)
Imagine wandering the streets of Le Marais, Paris, with no destination in mind—just the joy of exploring. Suddenly, you come across Lafayette Anticipations. Drawn by its elegant façade or perhaps pure curiosity, you step inside.
The space feels like a hidden gem. A peaceful café invites you to pause, while a library filled with curated art books sparks quiet reflection. Without realizing it, you find yourself exploring a free exhibition.
Each artwork surprises and challenges you, shifting how you see the world. But it’s on the top floor where you experience something truly magical.
There, you witness Bridget Polk’s rock-balancing performance. Her work isn’t just about stacking stones; it’s about creating balance amidst chaos. Using natural rocks and construction debris, she builds precarious sculptures that seem to defy gravity.
Watching her process feels like a reflection of life itself—fragile, unpredictable, yet deeply meaningful. Her creations stand for moments or weeks, shaped by time and nature, before inevitably collapsing. Like her sculptures, we all navigate the delicate balance of uncertainty and change.
This unexpected moment, high above the city, reminds you to embrace life’s surprises, find peace in the unknown, and let go of the need for control.
About Bridget Polk’s Performance
Bridget Polk’s rock-balancing performance, presented on the third floor of the Coming Soon exhibition, went beyond traditional stone stacking. By combining natural rocks with construction debris, she created sculptures that blended nature with human-made materials. Each piece stood delicately balanced, defying gravity until it inevitably fell.
The performance reflected the impermanence of life and civilizations. Like her sculptures, life is a series of rises and falls—a poignant reminder that beauty often lies in its transience.
Some questions we asked ourselves after this experience:
How can we find balance in life when everything feels unstable?
Have we ever experienced art that made us question what is possible?
What moments in our lives have felt like a delicate balance, much like Bridget Polk’s sculptures?
How can we embrace the unpredictability of life, and what lessons has it taught us?
Have you ever tried letting go of control and simply allowing yourself to experience whatever comes your way?
